The following poem was written by First Lt. Holiel Ascol, a bombardier in the 436th Squadron at Carswell Air Force Base. First published on Memorial Day, 30 May 1949, in the base newspaper Lone Star Scanner, it was republished one year later following the death of Lt. Ascol on 14 February 1950 when he bailed out of a burning B-36 off the coast of British Columbia. Ascol, a native of Sioux City, Iowa, served 426 combat hours on 53 missions in the Aleutians in 1942-1943 and was decorated with the Purple Heart and Air Medal. We thank Lt. Ascol's daughtor, Ann Ascol Roberts, for sharing her father's poem with us.
The last
note of the bugle softly fades away. Well remember when in battle how with
gallantry you died. Brave men die, but not their spirits; they
are with us evermore, Courage born of bravest danger can
overthrow the throne of kings- |
